NavyC5ISRThe U.S. Navy is considering changing its procurement strategy for the Next Generation Enterprise Network program from a sole-source method to a multiple-award contracting model, SIGNAL Magazine reported Wednesday.

Robert Ackerman writes Capt. Michael Abreu, Naval Enterprise Networks program manager, said the Navy seeks to engage with vendors in order to determine if segmentation of NGEN offerings would help the military branch address future information technology requirements.

A team led by Hewlett Packard Enterprise is scheduled to complete the current round of hardware and associated support work under the original $3.45 billion NGEN contract in June 2018.

The service branch looks to divide the follow-on contract into end-user IT hardware management, productivity services and file sharing and cloud delivery segments, Federal News Radio reported Friday.

“In that [segmentation] model what we are trying to do is achieve speed and agility while still trying to balance all the rest of the things we need to do at the enterprise scale,” Abreau told audience at an industry day held Wednesday in Virginia, according to the station.

The report said the Navy aims to identify a path forward for the successor NGEN acquisition vehicle by fall.
