smiths detectionSmiths Detection has updated its IONSCAN 600 portable desktop trace detector to offer narcotics identification on top of the technology’s existing explosives detection feature.

The new IONSCAN 600 will work to detect narcotics such as amphetamine, cocaine, heroin, ketamine, MDA and MDMA, SDI said Thursday.

SDI added the updated system is designed to provide narcotics and explosives detection either separately or simultaneously for a range of applications such as aviation, ports, borders, customs and prison facilities.

SDI also looks integrate a built-in compact thermal printer into IONSCAN 600 to offer on-the-spot analysis results and logs documentation starting in October 2016.
