Northrop Grumman AQS-24BNorthrop Grumman will demonstrate a sensor technology designed for mine detection, localization and classification at the Unmanned Warrior exercise to be hosted by the U.K. navy in October.

The company said Thursday its AQS-24B mine-hunting system will be towed by an Atlas Electronik UK-built ARCIMS unmanned surface vessel in a simulated environment  during the event to exhibit how the sensor could integrate into maritime operations.

AQS-24B is equipped with a synthetic aperture sonar and an optical laser line scan sensor.

“Securing access and situational awareness in the maritime environment has become increasingly important for many nations,” said Andrew Tyler, chief executive of Northrop’s European subsidiary.

Tyler added the Unmanned Warrior exercise will showcase integrated technologies that can work to facilitate unmanned military operations of U.S and British navies and their allies.

Unmanned Warrior, a part of the biannual Joint Warrior exercise, will feature more than 40 unmanned vehicles, sensors and systems that will be demonstrated in military missions for the U.K. navy in various themes such as mine-hunting, sea surveying, submarine simulation and fleet reconnaissance.
