lockheeds-bioenergy-processLockheed Martin has launched a new facility in Owego, New York, designed to convert waste into renewable energy.

Lockheed said Tuesday its bioenergy plant implements a system that uses a Concord Blue-built technology platform that works to derive electricity from waste through the advanced gasification process.

The advanced gasification process involves the collection and use of wood-waste, industrial and municipal solid waste and then turns waste into synthetic gas, which could be used to power a combustion engine in order to generate electricity.

Lockheed secured a $43 million contract from Concord Blue in March to begin construction work on a bioenergy facility in Herten, Germany.

The 5-megawatt plant in Germany will work to convert 50,000 tons of feedstock on an annual basis into renewable energy in order to supply electricity to approximately 5,000 local households and businesses.
