Fuel CellGeneral Motors has introduced a demonstration hydrogen cell-powered truck built to store energy, make water and act as a near-silent method of transportation for troops, Defense News reported Monday.

Valerie Insinna writes the Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 demonstration vehicle has not been linked to a particular program of record but the U.S. Army and General Motors took notice of the potential use of hydrogen power.

The company will deliver the truck to the service branch’s Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center the following year after the completion of calibration tests and ZH2 will move to three different bases where soldiers will conduct off-road mobility tests to gauge fuel cell technology viability.

“The idea is that we want to get the experience on how it’s actually behaving in the terrain that they would normally encounter, and they can get a little bit of hands-on experience with the vehicle itself and make sure that they understand what it actually means to their mission,” Charlie Freese, GM’s fuel cell business executive director, told Defense News.
