Davis Johnson, U.S. public sector vice president at Riverbed Technology, has said software-defined wide-area networking could support federal agencies’ digital transformation initiatives amid challenges posed by legacy information technology.

Johnson wrote in a guest post published Thursday on GCN that SD-WAN works to provide agility, automation, visibility and flexibility to support the needs of key areas such as DevOps, customer experiences, the Internet of Things and big data.

An International Data Corp. report forecasted that 60 percent of digital transformation initiatives will not be able to scale by 2017 due to a lack of strategic architecture, Johnson noted.

He added SD-WAN automates the correction of configurations to accommodate the application bandwidth requirements of a DevOps approach to digital transformation.

SD-WAN helps agencies adjust network performance and application delivery “on-the-fly” to meet needs and prevent network outages in applications to optimize customer experience, Johnson wrote.

Johnson added SD-WAN works to address IoT’s network connectivity demand as well as maximize network resources to help agencies manage high volumes of data.
