night-vision gogglesA team of Australian National University researchers and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency have begun to discuss efforts to develop night vision glasses that could provide a direct view into infrared, The Sydney Morning Herald reported Wednesday.

Marcus Strom writes Dragomir Neshev, an ANU professor and lead researcher of the project, said nano crystals made of aluminium-gallium-arsenide could be fitted to glasses to provide night vision and potentially help users see colors in the infrared.

ANU researchers aim to create a prototype of the technology within five years to support the production of lightweight night vision glasses, Strom reported.

The researchers noted the technology has potential military and civilian applications such as the detection of counterfeit devices in bank notes and cell imaging for medical procedures, according to the report.
