IBM-logo, ExecutivemosaicIBM has partnered with the government of Madrid to leverage an analytics-based infrastructure in helping the city manage environmental services for its three million residents.

The $20 million project will use IBM’s intelligent operations and asset management platforms to monitor street maintenance, waste management, lighting, irrigation, green spaces across the Spanish city, IBM said Monday.

City officials also intend for the IBM smart technology to help them communicate with the public and respond to citizens’ environmental concerns faster.

“This project will serve as an example for other European capital cities which will be able to follow Madrid’s model as the first European capital with comprehensive public services integration,” said Marta Martinez, general manager of IBM operations in Spain, Portugal, Greece and Israel.

IBM will implement its technology to also help the city integrate citizen-provided information and data gathered from sensors, cameras and geographic information systems.

The system will work to provide Madrid’s government a consolidated view of processes, agencies and service providers involved in urban environmental management, according to IBM.
