Patrick Binning, formerly a program manager at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, has been appointed as mission area executive for national security space at APL.

Binning will lead the organization’s efforts to build space-based technologies for the national security sector, APL said Thursday.

He is an aerospace industry veteran with 25 years of program management, research,  development, technology transfer, satellite operations and executive management  experience.

“Patrick’s wide range of experience and recognized expertise in national security space missions and programs make him an excellent choice for this role,” said Michael Ryschkewitsch, head of APL’s space exploration sector.

Binning joined APL in 2014 to manage intelligence programs at the lab’s national security space mission area and previously served as head of the mission management office at the Naval Research Laboratory.

Prior to NRL, he also managed various programs at the Missile Defense Agency, Office of the Secretary of Defense and National Reconnaissance Office as well as served as fellow in the Commerce Department‘s Science and Technology Fellowship program.
