Tony Blinken, a former deputy secretary of state and deputy national security adviser, has joined the board of advisers of Washington, D.C.-based business advisory and strategic communications firm Laurel Strategies.

Laurel CEO Alan Fleischmann said in a statement released Wednesday that Blinken brings experience and insights into geopolitical challenges to the company’s advisory board.

Blinken has traveled to 40 countries and supported diplomacy efforts in the fight against the Islamic State militant group during his tenure at the State Department as deputy secretary.

He also helped the department establish a presence in Silicon Valley and create an innovation forum that aims to enlist technologists in efforts to address foreign policy problems.

Blinken served as deputy national security adviser under the Obama administration.
