Eric Fanning, former secretary of the U.S. Army, has been appointed to the board of advisers at the Center for a New American Security.

He joins other CNAS advisory board members who came from various government, military, academic and private organizations, the Washington-based think tank said Wednesday.

CNAS CEO Michele Flournoy said that Fanning has broad leadership experience across the Defense Department and aims to share his knowledge and insights to help the organization  develop national security strategies.

He previously served as chief of staff to the defense secretary, undersecretary and acting secretary of the U.S. Air Force, and deputy undersecretary of the U.S. Navy.

Fanning also held positions at CBS News, the House Armed Services Committee, Business Executives for National Security and the White House, where he served as the associate director of political affairs.
