Army Maj. Gen. Joseph Caravalho, joint staff surgeon at the Defense Department, has been appointed president and CEO of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine in a move that takes effect Sept. 1.

He will succeed John Lowe, who retired from his posts in May after 25 years of service, HJF said Wednesday.

“Caravalho’s vast experience, talent and commitment to continue HJF’s extraordinary service to military medicine and public health made him the clear choice for this role,” said Philip Odeen, chairman of the HJF council of directors.

Caravalho is a military physician who also serves as chief medical adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The 30-year Army veteran held senior leadership positions within the service branch such as deputy commanding general of the Army Medical Command, deputy surgeon general and commanding chief of the Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and Brooke Army Medical Center.

HJF is a Bethesda, Maryland-based nonprofit organization that has at least 2,200 U.S. employees that work to advance medical education and research efforts across the military medical community through clinical trial administration, research program management and staff recruitment services.
