DHS Taps Five Firms for Nuclear, Radiological Threat Detection R&D Services - top government contractors - best government contracting event

The Department of Homeland Security has awarded separate contracts to five companies to conduct research-and-development projects to support DHS’ nuclear and radiological threat detection efforts.

DHS announced the contract awards in a FedBizOpps notice posted Wednesday.

Contractors will assist DHS’ Domestic Nuclear Detection Office in exploratory research into technologies or approaches that can help detect and report attempts to import or export a nuclear device, special nuclear material or radiological material outside of regulatory control.

The awardees and their respective contract amounts are:

  • Bubble Technology Industries – $8.2M
  • Leidos – $4.7M
  • Radiation Monitoring Devices – $3.98M
  • Rapiscan Laboratories – $4.4M
  • Raytheon – $1.4M

DNDO aims to focus its studies on a mobile active interrogation system made using neutrons; radiation isotope identification device based on thallium bromide semiconductor materials; and nuclear detection methods through centralized data analytics.

DHS established DNDO in 2005 to conduct collaborative research on operational capabilities to respond to and attribute nuclear attacks.
