HIIGeneral Dynamics Electric Boat has awarded a $197M contract modification to Huntington Ingalls Industries‘ Newport News Shipbuilding division for long-lead time materials and advance construction of the Columbia ballistic missile submarine.

HII said Tuesday it will use funds to procure components and materials needed for advance construction of SSBN 826, the first vessel within the Columbia class of submarines.

The class will consist of 12 ballistic missile submarines and is intended to succeed the existing Ohio class.

The Columbia class will formally enter construction in fiscal year 2021, with the initial delivery to the U.S. Navy slated for 2028.

In September, General Dynamics received an earlier $480.6M modification to the prime contract with the service branch for SSBN 826’s construction.
