Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding business will test Verizon’s 5G ultra wideband service in a move to achieve network connectivity requirements and evaluate potential virtual and augmented reality applications.

Newport News seeks to demonstrate 5G technologies’ capabilities in integrating robotics, 3D holographic design, automation and real-time analytics into business operations, Verizon said Wednesday.

Verizon noted 5G connectivity will help Newport News link Internet of Things sensors and produce real-time reports on machines and processing systems.

“The first and most meaningful use cases for 5G will be in the enterprise space and we've built our 5G network to support those truly differentiated experiences that will reshape entire industries,” said Tami Erwin, executive vice president and CEO at Verizon.
