The National Spectrum Consortium has awarded a By Light Professional IT Services company a $31.3 million other transaction agreement to advance the 5G wireless communications technology for U.S. Army combat training applications.

Cole Engineering Services, Inc., will lead a team of contractors to develop prototype enhancements for an augmented and virtual reality 5G network at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington, By Light said Tuesday.

In the three-phase project, CESI will demonstrate AR and VR technologies at JBLM in an effort to enable Army officers to use 5G cellular connectivity for mission planning and training.

“Our 5G network solution addresses the breadth of challenges presented by foliage and weather, vastly improves the performance of the network in terms of number of participants and reduces latency,” said Thomas Fransson, CESI’s senior vice president of operations for simulation products and services.

Work by CESI and its teammates Eridan Communications, Prizm XR and Athena Technologies will support the Department of Defense 5G Strategy Implementation Plan, which charts the U.S. strategy for accelerating 5G implementation across the country.

In December 2019, CESI received a task from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to work on the Prototype Resilient Operations Testbed for Expeditionary Urban Operations program.
