Some U.S. Army and technology industry representatives discussed ways small businesses and technology entrepreneurs can overcome the challenge of transforming ideas into practical applications during an Army Futures Command-hosted forum.

AFC reports that Matthew Willis, director of applied small business innovation research and prize competitions at the Army, said during the 2021 Advanced Technology Summit that the branch uses available authorities and different mechanisms to recognize innovation efforts within the private sector.

Panelists at the invite-only, in-person event pointed out that encouraging students and researchers to apply their laboratory discoveries to real-world needs could help increase the chances of new technologies reaching the fielding and commercialization phases.

Representatives from technology company TexPower, startup accelerator organization FedTech and the University of Texas at Austin were part of the panel discussion.

The Army on Wednesday unveiled its new interactive website that offers information about contracting opportunities for small businesses.
