Leonardo DRS has shipped the main propulsion motor of the U.S. Navy’s upcoming lead Columbia-class nuclear submarine to General Dynamics‘ electric boat business after completing factory acceptance testing of the prototype motor.

The defense product and technology company said Tuesday GD Electric Boat will handle the integration of the first production unit into the vessel.

DRS is responsible for designing and producing the main propulsion electric motor and other major components of the Columbia Electric Drive Propulsion system.

The company’s DRS Naval Power Systems division secured contracts to design, test, qualify and manufacture system components to support a land-based test facility and to meet the requirements of the first two submarines of the class.

The company conducts its Columbia class program-related efforts at its facilities in Fitchburg, Massachusetts Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Danbury, Connecticut.
