GEGeneral Electric Co. has moved to grow its smart grid services customer base by adding new municipal and rural utilities clients for the subscription-based offering, Greentech Media reported Thursday.

Jeff St. John writes at least six more customers have subscribed to GE’s Grid IQ solutions-as-a-service unit in addition to existing clients such as the municipal utilities of Holly Spring, Miss., and Skiatook, Okla.

Todd Jackson, Grid IQ Solutions product line lead, told the publication that the platform is nearly 75 percent filled up and that GE is set to announce more customer wins.

Those clients are using GE’s cellular communications, point-to-multipoint service and smart meters under a ten-year contract, according to the report.

St. John writes GE’s Grid IQ Connect platform features data and applications for managing meter data and back-end network operations, as well as energy web portals and prepayment plans for users.

Jackson told GTM the Grid IQ Restore component has been built with outage detection and management options and the Grid IQ Respond with demand response and load reduction.
