CloudVMware and Carpathia will collaborate to provide federal agencies a hybrid cloud computing service as both companies seek to acquire an authority-to-operate provision under the governmentwide FedRAMP program.

The VMware vCloud Government Service will be designed to run legacy and new applications in order to help agencies extend their data centers into a cloud computing environment that holds a FedRAMP security authorization, both companies said Tuesday.

Peter Weber, Carpathia CEO, said the companies intend to help agencies expand their existing data center infrastructure and applications to a FedRAMP-compliant public cloud.

“VMware has helped federal agencies optimize and manage their data center infrastructure for more than 14 years, and helping them to now use that infrastructure in the cloud is a natural extension of our core business,” said Lynn Martin, public sector vice president at VMware.

“More importantly, because so many federal agencies are already using VMware solutions, it’s a natural evolution of what they are already doing.”

The new service will be based on VMware vSphere, which some agencies use to manage their data centers.

Carpathia is a cloud operator and provider of cloud services and managed hosting for government agencies.
