Level 3 Communications has been awarded a subcontract to provide connectivity services for Northrop Grumman-built simulation and training systems used by the Air Force.

The Air Force’s distributed mission operation network uses Northrop simulators that are designed for the branch to train pilots on aerial refueling and other complex flight maneuvers, Level 3 said Tuesday.

Northrop built the multi-platform training network with the goal of helping the service minimize incident risks when conducting missions in remote environments.

“The Level 3 network is incorporated into the distributed training solutions Northrop Grumman provides to the U.S. Air Force,” said Ed Morche, senior vice president of East region enterprise and government markets for Level 3.

“Level 3 will provide fully redundant and secure, global network connectivity for the U.S. Air Force to conduct virtual training for pilots,” said Lisa Harris, Northrop DMON program manager.

The Air Force awarded Northrop the initial DMON contract in July 2003 and renewed the work in July 2013.

Level 3 says it has supported more than 50 global training and operations sites under the Air Force program.
