A General Dynamics business unit will provide information technology services to support the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services‘ Virtual Research Data Center, which contains electronic Medicare data sets.

General Dynamics Information Technology will work on data analytics, infrastructure development and maintenance functions, as well as provide training and technical assistance, the company said Wednesday.

“CMS is the nation’s largest health insurer, maintaining data for more than one billion Medicare claims per year,” said Marcus Collier, senior vice president of General Dynamics Information Technology’s health and civilian solutions unit.

Collier added the unit will work with CMS to develop tools for collecting, warehousing, managing, analyzing and reporting large volumes of healthcare data.

Support work will occur in Des Moines, Iowa; Owings Mills, Md.; and Warrenton, Va.

VRDC was launched in November 2013 to help nearly 300 researchers access and analyze data files via a secure virtual desktop with tools for access control and data privacy protection.
