University of MarylandThe University of Maryland has opened its Center for Orbital Debris Education and Research to facilitate collaboration between academia, industry and government to address issues related to orbital space debris, GCN reported Thursday.

“Most existing organizations focus on just one aspect of the problem—tracking, modeling, remediation, mitigation, policy, etc.—but CODER will serve as a research collective to provide expertise in all of these areas,” said Raymond Sedwick, founding faculty member and associate professor of aerospace engineering at UMD.

UMD aims for the center lead research in each problem area, push for international policies to address the orbital debris issue and serve as a repository of knowledge and findings on the subject.
