northrop-Grumman_BLUENorthrop Grumman has begun construction on a 220,000 sq ft office and research facility at its Melbourne International Airport campus in Florida, the Orlando Business Journal reported Wednesday.

The building is part of the first phase of the company’s planned $500 million, 720,000 sq ft expansion of the campus, Anjali Fluker writes in the exclusive report.

The completed project is expected to bring 1,800 jobs in total to the region, with 300 available vacancies for this first facility by December 2015.

Fluker said Northrop does not have a date yet for the groundbreaking for the next phase, which will include an additional 500,000 sq ft to the campus and 1,500 more jobs, although all vacancies are expected to be filled by 2019.
