Anne Altman, general manager for IBM‘s U.S. federal business, suggests that a blend of public and private cloud elements could offer government agencies more control and better security, Nextgov reported Monday.

She writes that the hybrid model is gaining traction in the federal market as agencies migrate their information technology functions to the cloud.

“It has become clear through our discussions with government and industry leaders that true IT transformation within federal agencies will come through with full integration of hybrid clouds — and this should guide the products and services IT providers develop moving forward,” Altman stated.

Altman says agencies should find a hybrid cloud technology that would give them full control of data access while addressing transparency and compliance issues.

A unified cloud framework is also intended to help users manage a bare-metal server environment, according to Altman.

“These dedicated servers provide added control and enhanced performance predictability and are ideal for government workloads focused on high performance computing and advanced analytics,” she added.

She also believes that hybrid cloud should have multiple, customized protective layers for federal chief information officers to secure their organizations’ IT systems.

“Agencies will continue to look to the cloud as they transform their IT infrastructure over time, moving services to this platform.”

“As they do, they should consider a hybrid model that provides flexibility and scalability without sacrifice.”
