AirplaneThales has finalized a value-added reseller agreement with Inmarsat to offer satellite-based, in-flight Internet connectivity to airline carriers.

Inmarsat chose Thales as its partner to deliver high-speed broadband access on passenger flights through Inmarsat’s GX Aviation satellite technology, Thales said Wednesday.

“This is a very important milestone, the services will be offered both integrated with our AVANT system or on a standalone basis,” said Dominique Giannoni, Thales corporate vice president and chief executive of its in-flight entertainment and connectivity business.

The companies aim to provide aviation customers worldwide with Ka-band broadband speeds of up to 50 megabits per second beginning in 2015.
