Insitu, a Boeing subsidiary, has upgraded its ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicle platform.

ScanEagle 2 features a reciprocating internal combustion propulsion system that is built for small UAS, Insitu said Wednesday.

“ScanEagle 2 will shepherd us into the next two decades as we focus on reliability and affordability and enter the civil/commercial market,” said Ryan Hartman, Insitu president and CEO.

“And as ScanEagle has always done, ScanEagle 2 will provide the capability our warfighters have come to expect from Insitu – yet more affordable and more capable.”

Insitu also expanded the new ScanEagle’s payload power and options, navigation system and digital video system.

The second version of ScanEagle was developed based on an open architecture to work with other unmanned systems.
