TeleCommunication Systems Inc. has won a five-year, $16.4 million contract to interconnect 911 emergency call centers across the state of South Dakota.

TCS will operate South Dakota’s NG9-1-1 system for 29 of the state’s public safety answering centers under the direction of the South Dakota 911 Coordination Board, TCS said Thursday.

Lynne Seitz, senior vice president of TCS’ safety and security group, said the company intends for the system to help South Dakota deliver 911 services to its residents “while establishing a seamless migration path for NG9-1-1 services as technologies and standards evolve.”

The system works to collect 911 traffic and route calls to the proper 911 answering point jurisdiction among the 29 centers.

TCS will build the technology to help citizens transmit pictures and video to the answering points and send text messages to 911 across the state for any wireless carrier.
