HARRIS1Harris Corp. has fully installed and integrated the computer hardware for the ground segment of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration‘s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite–R series.

The company said Wednesday the hardware makes up the ground segment’s operational system, which works to help GOES-R satellites perform their weather detection and tracking mission.

“System testing can be completed now that the hardware is installed and integrated,” said Romy Olaisen, vice president of global weather solutions programs at Harris’ government communications systems business.

As systems integrator on the GOES-R program, Harris delivered the following components:

  • 2,100 servers
  • 149 racks of network equipment
  • 317 workstations
  • 3 PB of storage
  • 454 blade servers
  • 3,632 cores

Harris is also the prime contractor and supports the program at three NOAA locations.

The GOES-R program is currently at prelaunch testing ahead of the first satellite’s launch in March 2016, Harris said.

GOES-R provides weather data to the National Weather Service, the National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service and other consumers of weather and environmental data products.
