DigitalGlobe has partnered with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in utilizing earth observation technologies in support of U.N. social, economic and scientific development programs for developing countries.

The memorandum of understanding covers the development of a web-based platform to enable access to catalogs of satellite images and data and analytical services, DigitalGlobe said Thursday.

“The arrangement provides an ideal platform to explore how high-resolution satellite imagery and geospatial analytics can be more efficiently and effectively shared across the entire United Nations system,” said Jeffrey Tarr, DigitalGlobe president and CEO.

The company said it will also advise UNOOSA on the use of geospatial analytics and remote sensing imagery and help drive the organization’s adoption of these analytics practices.

“Cooperation and collaboration in the area of geospatial information and analytics will improve how the United Nations, including its member-states and its system of organizations, can address global economic, environmental, geopolitical and societal issues,” noted UNOOSA Director Simonetta Di Pippo.

DigitalGlobe will also participate in the U.N. Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response, the U.N. Geographic Information Working Group and other activities as part of the MOU.
