neustarA Neustar report on the incidence and impact of distributed denial-of-service attacks in North America indicates that businesses are more prepared to address DDoS attacks as their number and scale of impact also increase.

The company said Monday the number of North American firms that use a hybrid of on-site and cloud-based technologies to protect against DDoS has grown by 55 percent compared to the previous year.

“The increased hybrid adoption reflects the growing need for companies to have immediate, on-premise DDoS defense capabilities, in addition to surge defense capabilities in response to larger attacks,” said Margee Abrams, director of security services at Neustar.

“[When] revenues and brand reputation are at risk, deploying a hybrid solution offers the best of both worlds: immediate on-premise protection with the capacity that only cloud providers can offer.”

Other findings in the “2015 North America Denial of Service (DDoS) Attacks & Impact Report” indicate a significant percentage of companies reporting attacks that are bigger in scale, lengthier and more frequent in occurrence as well as result in hits to customer trust, brand reputation and revenue.

Neustar surveyed 510 North American companies from many industries to produce the report, which the company will present at this week’s RSA Conference in San Francisco.
