US Coast Guard cutterHuntington Ingalls Industries business Ingalls Shipbuilding has turned over the Legend-class cutter James to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The service received the national security cutter Friday and is scheduled to commission the vessel in Boston on Aug. 8, HII said Friday.

Jim French, NSC program manager at Ingalls Shipbuilding, said the NSC program “continues to prove the benefits of continuous production, which allows us to learn and improve from ship to ship.”

The 418-foot-long ship was christened after Capt. John James of the U.S. Life-Saving Service and is the fifth NSC constructed by HII division for the military branch, HII said.

NSCs are designed to sail up to 12,000 nautical miles at 28 knots and have a flight deck for unmanned and manned rotary-wing planes and a launch and recovery facility for inflatable hull boats.
