sonarNorthrop Grumman will support the design, development, production, testing and delivery of the AN/AQS-24C minehunting sonar systems for the U.S. Navy under a contract worth up to $14.8 million.

The Defense Department said Friday the systems will support the volume search minehunting operations of the Navy’s MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter.

AN/AQS-24C works to simultaneously detect volume or moored naval mines and hunt bottom mines using an ahead-looking topographic large area survey volume search sonar, DoD added.

Northrop will perform work in California, Georgia, Maryland and Utah through Dec. 31, 2016.

DoD said the obligated amount of approximately $7 million is from the Navy’s research, development, test and evaluation funds for fiscal year 2014 and other procurement funds for fiscal 2015.
