Virginia-class-submarineGeneral Dynamics will continue its upgrade of the AN/BYG-1 Weapons Control System Technology Insertion and Advanced Processing Build software for U.S. Navy and Australian navy submarines under a $20 million contract modification.

The company said Thursday the modification extends its efforts to provide additional situational awareness and tactical functions to submarines since the original contract award in 2009.

“Many of the system updates and capability improvements are the direct result of feedback from sailors and their commanders who work with the systems every day,” said Carlo Zaffanella, vice president and general manager of maritime and strategic systems for General Dynamics’ mission systems business.

According to General Dynamics, the AN/BYG-1 software works to track surface ships and other submarines for potential deployment of missiles or torpedoes against threats.

The Los Angeles-, Seawolf-, Virginia– and SSGN-class submarines of the U.S. Navy and the Collins-class submarines of Australia are equipped with AN/BYG-1 software and hardware, the company added.

General Dynamics will perform work in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
